The main attraction however is the snorkeling at a bay without road access. For us this involved a steep foot trail. As we learned as we were leaving, for most it involved a ride out on kayak or party boat.
From there our good timing held up to see a very large partially collapsed lava tube near the kona airport.
The hike was quite pretty with ancient walls, grass areas and incredible views of the coastline.
Sadly there are no photos of the coral or many beautiful fish. Some favorites were schools of yellow fish that were the color of flower petals and a black fish that had neon running stripes between body and fin and mostly swam on its side.
Here is the post snorkel joy.
We timed it to be leaving as this arrived.
The hike back up was a very hot one but we made it back to the hotel in time for a quick shower and hasty packing prior to check out.
From there we headed north on the main road the circles the island. Our objective was hapuna beach state park. A premier beach park.
Old movie theaters in various stages of use and disrepair are found throughout the island.
Along the way we had the good fortune to remember the recommendation to eat shave ice while in Hawaii just in time to find this wonderful place.
All natural, organic, made from fruit flavors for a wonderful icy and refreshing treat. Originated in Japan. Our first sample was stunning.
The beach was a crowded affair so we hiked down to a spot where we soaked and watched hermit crabs in tide pools which were frequently renewed with incoming water.
